I was crusin’ around today on the way to work, when I came across a pretty interesting and thought provoking song by a band called FloBots. I believe it was titled “Handlebars”. Anybody hear it?

If you haven’t already, it’s definitely worth a listen. The whole rap/rock is usually a tricky, difficult thing to nail but they get it done. They get it done with style, intensity, and an awesome trumpet solo.
After I heard the song, I decided to dig around and figure out who these guys were. Their website not only feautured a bulletin board of recent events with the band (they just got signed by Universal!), it also had a brand new video for the song “Handlebars”.
Reading about their goals and aspirations was an awesome experience. The Denver-based band truly seems to have their heads on their shoulders, and, most importantly, they seem to care about the power of creativity and the power of good music. Check out an excerpt taken from one of their posts:
“After the show, a representative from Universal Republic approached us and offered us a formal record contract.
Our first reaction was to be skeptical. We had always doubted a major label would provide a proper path to accomplish our goals. Creative control and political freedom are important to us, and we did not expect a major label to offer us those things…
To fully comprehend the opportunity, we had to imagine the possibilities. We imagined a world where the message of Fight With Tools (their new album) is the mainstream, with the airwaves broadcasting honest statements about our nation’s past violence and calling for a new vision of a fully engaged, non-violent society. We imagined a network of music fans in cities around the globe organizing to implement this vision. We imagined major recording artists rallying people to become involved in a grassroots peace movement. We imagined the full weight of the music industry mobilizing to stop the next war.”
How freakin’ awesome is that? Though the song “Handlebars” intrigued me initially because it was musically diverse and melodic, I gave it a listen again after reading about their passion for peace. Listen closely; “Handlebars” packs in an important message.
It was great to hear such honesty and drive from a band that seems to have a bright future in the main stream. With a nation already rallying for change, the Flobots may be in a position to ride the crest of one beautiful wave.
So, if you have a minute, cruise over to their site and read their stuff, and definitely check out their new, Frank Miller-inspired video for “Handlebars”.

I hadn’t even heard of this song until this blog, so I went over to youtube to check it out. Wow. Although the video was a little depressing, it was definiitely worth watching. If there’s a reason I keep reading your blogs, it’s for finding new shit like this. Keep it up, Alan.

I can ride my bike with no handlebars, no handlebars, no handlebars…. Jeez, that song is stuck in my head way too much. I had no idea that they said that about their music, though. That makes them way cooler.
